In the News: Bacteria Impacts Your Mood

We spend a lot of money and time ridding our lives of bacteria. But as it turns out, bacteria is a vital ingredient for good mental health.

No, I'm not talking about bacteria from dirty, unwashed hands. I'm talking about the trillions of good bacteria taking up residence in our intestines.

These little guys are vital for healthy digestion and plays a vital role in regulating mood from day to day.

In this study, anxiety-prone mice found their Zen after receiving a certain bacteria similar to that found in yogurt.

Plus, these mice had higher levels of GABA, a brain chemical that impacts mood.

Too little GABA can contribute to feelings of anxiety and depression .

Foods that Boost Mood

Foods rich in good bacteria include:

1. Yogurt

2. Fermented vegetables like Kimchi and Sauerkraut

Both are basically fermented cabbage. Kimci is a spicy Korean fermented cabbage dish.

Sauerkraut is a German dish made of fermented cabbage. Both are rich in good bacteria.
