Acupuncture and Depression: This Ancient Technique Can Offset Symptoms

You may be one of the 17.5 million Americans battle depression.  Sadly,  prescription anti-depressants don’t work for everyone. The side-effects are prevalent and in some cases, deadly.

As the number of depression sufferers continues to rise, more people are pursuing natural effective, drug-free treatments.

Acupuncture is one such treatment.

Acupuncture and Depression:
How Does It Work Anyway?

In a word: energy. This, according to Chinese medicine is the essence, the lifeblood that flows through all of us.

When this energy or qi {pronounced chee} is blocked, all sorts of negative stuff happens as a result.

Depression being on the top of the list.

Chinese medicine also believes that each organ is connected to meridians, or energy points on the body, that are linked to particular emotions like sadness, anger, fear… you get the picture.

Acupuncturists use needles to tap into these energy points and unclog the dam of stagnant energy.  The result is an improvement of the specifically targeted condition.

So think of acupuncture as the dynamite that decimates the logjam responsible for lack of energy flow to the lungs, liver, kidneys and heart.  Stagnation of energy to these organs corresponds with feelings of depression.

Does Acupuncture for Depression Relief
Seem a Little Over the Top?

It may all sound a little hard to believe, but don’t take my word for it.

In an analysis of 13 clinical studies and over 1,000 depression sufferers those who took SSRIs, a type of anti-depressant, with acupuncture experienced a 20 percent symptom improvement over six weeks.

This group saw much better results than those who only took the anti-depressants.

Here’s some more good news!

This study of 775 people with moderate to severe depression, showed that acupuncture was just as effective as talk therapy.  In fact, the acupuncture treatments worked better than talking with a therapist.

The study researchers used the Beck Depression Inventory Scale to rate the intensity of depression in study participants.  Those who did weekly acupuncture treatments started out at a 16 on the Beck Inventory Scale, which translates to moderate to severe depression.

By the end of the 12-week study, the acupuncture group dropped to a 9 on the Beck Scale (mild depression).

Acupuncture and Depression:
Finding A Good Match

The person you choose as your acupuncturist will play a very important role in your recovery.

No this person wouldn’t be counseling you. That kind of expertise is best left to a  therapist.  But it’s crucial that your acupuncturist is board and state certified in this ancient healing practice.

Second, but just as important, you must feel comfortable with this person.  After all, she or he will be sticking needles in you.

Interested in using this ancient form of medicine to manage your depression?  No problem, but first you'll have to find a certified acupuncturist.

The National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can help you out with that.  Click here to find a certified acupuncturist near you!

Does the acupuncturist has a website?  If so, pricing, hours, etc. would be listed here.  Is there a picture of the office, patient rooms?

You may be able to get a private tour without leaving home. When you think you've  found a good match, get in touch with a phone call or an email.   Start a conversation.

Tell them you’re looking to use acupuncture as a treatment for depression.  They should be willing and able to answer all your questions.

Yes, acupuncture is an effective remedy for relieving depression.  But remember that you can always combine it with different treatment techniques, such as meditation, counseling and various holistic therapies.

I hope this article helps you on your journey to better mental health!
