Try These Herbal Treatments for Depression Relief!

1. Saffron

Yes, that's right saffron.  It may not seem like it, but this exotic spice plays double agent for treating depression?

Well, it's true.

In one study, 60 participants with depression and anxiety received either 50 milligrams of saffron or a sugar pill twice a day for three months.  After 12 weeks the saffron group saw a reduction in symptoms with zero side effects. Reduction in anxiety and depression symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory and the Beck Anxiety Inventory.

Saffron has a pungent but slightly bitter taste.  It is used in meat, seafood, vegetable recipes and lends an amazing orange-yellow color to any dish. Try these saffron inspired recipes today!

Savor a warm bowl of Saffron Ginger Carrot Soup.

  • Enjoy a plate of Saffron Meyer Lemon Roasted Chicken
  • The supplemental saffron can is available in health food stores and online.  When shopping for a saffron supplement, look for ones that contain a standardized extract of Crocus sativus.

    2. Turmeric

Here's yet another exotic ingredient you may consider adding to your spice rack. Tumeric is a spice that is used a lot in cooking Indian dishes.  But as it so happens the active ingredient, curcumin, is a stellar antidepressant. A study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research proved that curcumin was just as effective as Prozac for managing depression.

    3. St. John's Wort

This herb fights depression by increasing the brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine, which help to elevate mood. In this way, it behaves a lot like anti-depressant drugs.  Read this article for more information on St. John's Wort for depression

If you're pregnant  or taking medication consult your physician before taking St. John's Wort.

    4. Ashwagandha

I tend to think of  Ashwagandha as a magic herb.  Ok, I know how that sounds, and no I'm not talking magic mushroom type feelings.  Although interestingly enough research is showing that mushrooms are a promising treatment for depression.  See this article for more info.

    Now as I was saying...

I take Ashwagandha and let me tell you this is a gentle and effective herbal treatment for depression. I notice a definite difference if I go a few days without taking it.

What makes this herb so special is that it works to lift your mood while reducing stress levels.  This makes Ashwagandha the perfect natural remedy for individuals who battle both depression and anxiety. And that's a pretty large number, by the way.

Oh, and this herb is also helpful for battling insomnia, a shared symptom of both anxiety and depression sufferers the world over.

    5. Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)

Whether you're into herbal medicine or not, you've probably aware the benefits of Ginkgo for improving memory and concentration.  But there's scientific proof that this ancient Chinese herb also serves other purposes, such as lifting depression

It does so by helping to elevate levels of those feel-good brain chemicals, serotonin, and dopamine and by increasing blood flow to the brain.

I hope this article helps you on your journey towards better mental health.
